How does a digital membership card work? ›

Organizations have the option to set up Digital Membership Cards, so that members receive a card attached to their Membership Confirmations. These Digital Membership Cards are compatible with all Apple's iOS devices (iPhones and iPads) and Google Wallet on Android devices.

Note: The digital payment option can only be used for Costco warehouse purchases (excluding the food court).

Virtual credit cards are a digital version of your physical credit card. They generate a unique credit card number for you to use in place of your physical card number, preventing the merchant from storing your credit card information and keeping your financial data more secure.

The difference between virtual, digital and disposable cards

A virtual card is stored on your phone and can be used to pay in stores or online. It has its own unique card number, expiry date, and CVC. A digital card is a copy of your physical bank card that's stored on your phone.

The company began asking customers to show photo ID alongside their membership passes last year — alleging that non-members were abusing its then-newly expanded self-checkout — and it has also restricted non-members from accessing their food courts (and, by extension, their $1.50 hot dogs).

Costco no longer allows food-court purchases to nonmembers.

The Costco membership card is non-transferable, but there are several ways to share the experience with family and friends. Anyone with a card can bring up to two guests to the Warehouse during each visit. Keep in mind that purchasing items is exclusive to Costco members.

A prepaid virtual card is not an actual plastic card. It is instead a virtual card that is a randomly generated credit card number that is based on a company's existing account. The number can be given to an employee to use for a single purchase. After the purchase is completed, the number will no longer work.
